• Hatters Celebration Gardens

    Atherstone, Warwickshire

In 2018, Red Kite were commissioned by North Warwickshire Borough Council to provide landscape design proposals for the Hatters Celebration Gardens, in Atherstone, which was once the gardens of Manor House belonging to the owner of one of Atherstone’s world famous Hatting Companies. The brief was to develop a masterplan that improved the sense of arrival of the site, formalised the connection to the Town Centre, but also provided the infrastructure for the Atherstone Hatters Society with a vision to create an outdoor museum dedicated to the industry. It was also an opportunity to create a loop path for scooter play and a performance area for the adjacent OSCA drama youth group.  We worked alongside local residents, the Hatters Society, and the OSCA centre, and the youth group presented their ideas in a public forum, to prepare initial RIBA 3 designs and cost estimate proposals to support a Heritage Lottery Application organised by the Council. Whilst this was not successful, a LEADER application was. Red Kite were then commissioned to prepare NBS specification and schedules of a reduced scheme to hit the Council’s timescales for procurement and implementation. Jack Moody Group were appointed as main contractors, and started work on site in November 2019, and although weather is slightly hampering progress the Site works will be complete by end February 2020. Our works involved:

    • Site analysis
    • Stakeholder and community consultation
    • Concept design (RIBA 3)
    • Heritage Lottery Fund application support
    • Developed and technical design (RIBA 5-6)
    • Contract administration
